Wikipedia offers a pretty detailed history of Balboa Park. “Placed in reserve in 1835, the park’s site is one of the oldest in the United States dedicated to public recreational use.”

San Diego was the first place in California I ever visited, way back in 1967, and I have good memories of it, including Balboa Park.
