Tarantula Hawk Wasp

I came across this fellow in southern Utah awhile back. At the time I didn’t know they delivered a very painful sting.

  5. several years ago, i watched one of these wasps drag a much larger (than it was) tarantula across my driveway and llama pen. the distance was at least 100 feet, which must have been “miles” to the insect. i looked up the info about this wasp and found out the name and some interesting facts about the wasp

  7. i would see this type of wasp a lot as it would walk on the ground and it wasnt until i saw it dragging the tarantula that i looked up about it. it doesnt kill the tarantula only stuns it. it then takes it back to its nest,in the ground, and lays eggs. the young then feed on the still alive tarantula before leaving the nest.
